Research interests and activities:
Laser Physics and Engineering: all kinds of fiber lasers, solid-state lasers, frequency conversion techniques, pulse generation methods, and coherent beam combinations.
Laser Development for Scientific and medical applications: laser system for laser guide star adaptive optics, lasers for laser cooling and spectroscopy, and yellow lasers for ophthalmology and dermatology etc.
Astrophotonics: development of specific laser systems and fiber optics, etc. for Astronomy.
Complex Photonics: coupled laser networks, random lasers, light wave in ordered, partially ordered and disordered media, micro-photonics.
Currently I am working on fiber laser based approaches for laser guide star and other scientific and medical application. Research topics includes narrow-line near-infrared fiber Raman amplifiers, frequency doubling in periodically poled nonlinear crystals, frequency doubling in external resonant cavity, coherent beam combination, direct visible fiber Raman lasers and amplifiers, long wavelength Yb fiber lasers and amplifiers, and Bismuth doped fiber amplifiers.
At European Southern Observatory, I had developed a narrow linewidth Raman fiber amplifiers technology for laser guide star adaptive optics, which would have strong impact on ground based astronomy. The breakthroughs have been featured as post deadline papers in three scientific conferences within 2009.
